What is a UNSPSC code and how do I choose the right ones?
UNSPSC is the eight digit category system AusTender classifies everything under. Choose the codes agencies actually publish work against, which is usually at family or class level rather than a precise commodity code.
The United Nations Standard Products and Services Code is a four level taxonomy: segment, family, class, then commodity, always eight digits. Australian agencies pick from the AusTender Customised UNSPSC Codeset, a curated subset published by the Department of Finance, so the practical vocabulary is much smaller than full UNSPSC.
Every planned procurement, approach to market, standing offer notice and contract notice carries a code. That means your choice of codes decides what you are notified about and what finds you. Too narrow and you miss work; too broad and you drown in irrelevant notices.
The useful trick is to check what agencies actually buy under a code before you register against it. Some codes carry thousands of contracts a year and some carry none.
